Message from Director Jose Eyzaguirre

Dear readers,

Mr. Jaime Cardenas, who opened this Office some nine years ago, ended in July this year his tour of duty and returned to Peru to assume another responsibilities.

I arrived in Taiwan just in time to observe its recovery process connected to the impacts of the SARS outbreak. From the beginning I was impressed by the struggle and the self-esteem that the people of this land showed. They seemed confidant that the problems resulting from the SARS outbreak would be reversed and that the island would continue its path of prosperity, which includes a environment conducive to making good business.

It was a good first encounter. I was able to appreciate the vigor and eagerness of Taiwanese people to overcome bad moments, like the "tiger" who emerges from a bad situation created against its will.

So, the climate is right to reassume the pending tasks. My duty entails strengthening the commercial ties that exist between Peru and Taiwan, as well as promoting Taiwanese investment in my country, and generating the interest for its people to visit Peru and enjoy the beautiful things we have to show to the world. Many of the beauties Peru has to offer are illustrated on this website.

Economically, Peru is doing fine. The political system is currently characterized by a continuing effort to improve the democratic process, thanks to the serious commitment between the Government and the people. According to the last macroeconomic figures released by the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, the GNP is growing this year by 4 percent this year, which is the highest growth rate in Latin America. Employment rates are also on the rise, especially in the manufacturing sector, and we expect things to stay on this track.

Last July, President Alejandro Toledo celebrated his second year in office. He has put forward a new agenda promoting several activities, both in rural and urban areas, aimed at combating poverty and generating employment opportunities. This new agenda fulfills his commitment to bringing prosperity, health, and education to the people.

In this regard, the Commercial Office of Peru in Taipei will strive to make available to the Taiwanese public all the information they need to make the right investment choices, whether it be for direct investment or to trade with their Peruvian counterparts.

Taipei, October 2003

Jose Eyzaguirre
Director
